In an age where many of our elected leaders are doing significantly more harm than good, it's quite refreshing to see a group of inspired people step forward and share their collective life experience and knowledge in a specialized area. That's what happens at the Qatar Leadership Conference (QLC). The QLC is designed to provide workshops for both student leaders and teachers involved in MUN and media studies. The conference program features MUN, debate and educational leaders working with participants in six main areas: skills building, professional learning, organization, teaching, community service, media and journalism.
After surviving an acid attack in 2011, Hanifa Nakiryowa founded the Centre for Rehabilitation of Survivors of Acid and Burns Violence, an NGO in Uganda . She shared her story as a victim of domestic abuse and how she now advocates for burn violence survivors.
Jamala Osman was a former Bank Manager at Barclays plc, tasked with running her first branch at the age of 21. She shared her difficult start to life and her dramatic turnaround.
GMB Akash is an internationally award winning photographer and humanitarian who shared his portraits of life in Bangledesh. I esteem Akash for the time he spends with each subject and how his stories penetrate the souls of his subject. Kellen shared his work at THIRST Project. Frank shared why he started All-American Model UN. Roha shared her story about building an eco-school and the Austrian Ambassador in Doha talked about diplomacy in distress. This guy named Newmo presented about his journey through the Pacific Garbage Patch!
Whether we have five or fifty participants in our workshops, we have the space and time to connect with young people who are motivated to promote change in their communities. The young leaders that attend this conference have an insatiable appetite for making their world a better place for all living creatures. It's hard not to walk away from a 50 minute workshop more knowledgeable, more empathetic, more capable and competent. We all take advantage of the opportunity to connect, ask questions, and collaborate. As you'll see in the photos below, our MUN family just keeps growing......
